Ikolomani Constituency is an elective constituency located in western Kenya, Kakamega County. It is also referred to as Kakamega South Sub County. It is bordered by Lurambi Constituency to the North, Sabatia and Emuhaya to the South, Shinyalu to the East and Khwisero to the West. Ikolomani Constituency is divided into four County wards; Idakho East, Idakho South, Idakho Central and Idakho North. Administratively, the Constituency is divided into two divisions; Ikolomani South covering; Iguhu, Eregi and Shikumu locations and Ikolomani North which covers Shirumba, Isulu and Shisele locations with a total of twenty-two (22) sub locations). The main inhabitants of the constituency are Abidakho of the Luhya tribe. Other dwellers of the constituency massively sttled as a result of intermarriages, education, professional appointments and trade include Maragolis, Abanyore, Abawanga, Abamarama, Abashisa, Kamba, Luo, Kikuyu and Indians. According to the 2019 census, the constituency has 111,743 people. The population density stands at an average of 764 persons per square kilometer. The constituency covers an area of 146.2 sq. Kilometers. Over three quarters of this land is arable. The main economic activity is smallholder farming of food crops. A paltry acreage is under cash crop farming of tea and sugar cane. Ikolomani constituency’s economy is dominated by small scale farming and peasantry activities. Being the staple food all Ikolomani residents plant maize for both food and cash. Other economic activities include gold mining which is done traditionally using crude tools that hardly help the miners to maximize on their yields. Mining activities are dominated by artisanal miners from the constituency and others from constituencies neighboring Ikolomani. There are also small-scale trading enterprises which include shop keeping, buying and selling of cereals and vegetables and ‘matatu’ transport business and there are no industries in the constituency apart from a few Jua Kali workshops in market places.
